More Than Just a Portrait

An extended family session is about more than just getting a nice photo of the grandparents with all the grandkids (though those are often the most treasured). These sessions are a celebration of your family’s legacy. They are a great add-on to your yearly portraits or a perfect standalone event when the whole branch of the family tree finally lands in town – like this family has done!

The holiday magic was off the charts this year – the festive studio sessions for kids and teens were amazing, as always! My Barrhaven photography studio was a revolving door of festive sweaters, sparkling ornaments, and so many joyful faces. I had such a wonderful time editing the galleries from November’s Christmas Mini Sessions, and I simply couldn’t wait any longer to share a few more of my favourite previews here on the blog!

While I spend most of the year trekking through the beautiful trails of Manotick and Nepean for outdoor family sessions, these indoor studio minis are a highlight of my festive season. It’s a completely different energy—cozy, controlled, and filled with the kind of excitement that only the holiday season can bring.

Teens, Kids, and Holiday Glee

This year, I saw a fantastic mix of ages. We had toddlers mesmerized by the “snow” and teens who brought their A-game with style and personality. It’s always a goal of mine to ensure that even the older kids have a great time; I keep the atmosphere light and fun so those genuine smiles come naturally.

Sitting in my lovingly-designed Christmas scene, these families captured memories that will surely be tucked into holiday cards and hung on mantels for years to come.

Family sessions at Watson’s Mill: If you live in Ottawa, you know that early November usually means pulling out the heavy parkas and bracing for the “grey season.” But every so often, Mother Nature gives us a gift. For this session at Watson’s Mill in Manotick, we were treated to an unseasonably warm afternoon and a sunset that felt like a dream.

While I do a lot of work with young children, it always a wonderful change of pace to photograph a family with grown kids. There is a different kind of beauty in capturing a family at this stage; the dynamic is more like a group of friends, filled with easy conversation and a relaxed energy.

Sunset Magic in Manotick

Because the sun sets so early in November, we met in the late afternoon to catch that coveted “Golden Hour.” The stone walls of the Mill and the rushing water of the Rideau River provided a timeless, architectural backdrop that perfectly complemented the family’s style.

The warm light hit the remaining fall colours just right, casting a glow that made it hard to believe we were just weeks away from winter. We focused on:

• Modern family portraits that look great on a gallery wall.
• Capturing the bond between siblings who are now finding their own paths in the world.
• Taking a few moments to celebrate the couple who started it all.

The Best of Both Worlds

Working in areas like Manotick, Barrhaven, and Nepean, I am constantly reminded of how lucky we are to have such diverse locations. The Mill offers a mix of rustic charm and natural beauty that works in any season, but under a warm November sun, it was truly something special.

This session was a perfect reminder that it is never “too late” in the year to get outdoors and capture your family’s story. Sometimes, the most unexpected days result in the most beautiful memories.

Extended Family Fall Sessions: There is something truly special about the way autumn transforms the landscape. Spending most of my time in Manotick, Barrhaven, and Nepean, I get to enjoy the crisp air, vibrant gold leaves and natural beauty all the time – and it’s amazing. This past fall, I had the absolute pleasure of working with a wonderful extended family who seized a rare moment of togetherness to document their family.

With family members visiting Ottawa from out of town to attend a wedding, they realized it was the perfect—and rare—opportunity to get everyone in front of the camera. We met at one of my favourite local conservation areas, where the towering trees and winding paths offered a stunning, timeless backdrop for their fall session.

Why I Love Extended Family Sessions

As a photographer specializing in outdoor family sessions in Barrhaven and Nepean, I know how difficult it can be to coordinate schedules. However, seeing three generations laughing together makes the effort worthwhile. During this session, we captured:
