Parent/caregiver photo sessions: A new take on photos of us and the children you love, with you.

Of all the scheduled sessions I do in a year, it’s hard to pick a favourite. 

I guess you might say that whatever I am gearing up to do, preparing for, e-mailing with clients about, is my favourite in that moment.

My traditional springtime Mommy & Me sessions have always been special, not only because they coincide with warmer weather, longer, sunnier days, and the fresh promise of spring, but also because they’ve given me an opportunity to create a special backdrop that communicates the enduring relationship between a mom and her little ones.

I’m always looking for new ways to build a set, either outdoors or in, that conveys the warmth and softness of retreating into a mother’s embrace. (I know, it sounds corny when you write it down! Which is why I prefer to draw on an atmosphere.)

I’ve recreated bedrooms with floral print coverlets and lively greenery, recalling early morning cuddles and warm sheets; I’ve asked everyone to cuddle in a wicker egg chair, it’s honeyed wood tones and creamy pillows a perfect metaphor for a mom’s hug…

But this year, I wanted to do something a little different. I wanted to cast the net a little wider.

The demographic that wants to celebrate their child extends beyond moms…to dads, grandparents and non-binary loved ones.

I realized that what I was striving to capture could be pared down to something more essential, elemental.

It’s connection I wanted to bring front and centre this year. I wanted to boil these photos down to their most essential, timeless meaning.

That’s why you’ll see I’ve opted for crisp images against a bare bones backdrop.

Because to me, it expresses the truest, purest thing about loving a child.

No matter the age, no matter the relationship, no matter the season.

This year, I’m re-branding Mommy & Me to something a little different.

I’m calling it, simply, US.

Cost: $200 for the first child + one parent or caregiver, with an add on of $30/per additional child.

Who is this for? This session is for one caregiver or parent or adult loved one and the children they’d like to create these beautiful images with. Please see the outdoor family sessions if you’re interested in a larger group – or reach out for studio family pricing.

More info: This session is 15-20 minutes and all images are of the caregiver/parent/adult loved one and the children. This is a session about togetherness, about your bond, time together and so all of the photos will include the the adult and one or more of the children – it’s about you. We’ll have fun and your gallery of 7-10 images in colour (with black & white versions) will be available within two weeks of your session, with the option to order prints/download the high resolution images.

It’s no secret that photography tends to be a seasonal business. That means that in off-peak times, it’s important to get creative.

Funnily enough, some of my longest time clients have come to love my “shoulder-season” February sessions above all others.

February is short on days, but it doesn’t always feel that way. Jammed between January and March, sometimes February feels like the cruelest month. We’ve had enough of winter already…but spring is still weeks, if not months away.

It was during one of these bleak days in February some years ago that I began thinking about how to create a photography session that would be an antidote to this cold and blah time of year. I wanted to capture a feeling of joy, hope and optimism, even if the temps hovered below zero.

I knew I’d need to work inside, because neither my gear, nor my fingers, could withstand long periods in sub-zero. (Well, mostly my fingers.) But I didn’t just want your usual posed portrait with a pretty backdrop.

I was after something bigger. Bolder. The wow factor.

It so happened that my middle daughter, Anna, was working on a project one evening, which involved a lot of glitter glue. If you know Anna, you know that there’s nothing she loves more than a sparkly craft. It caught the light and gave off this iridescent glow. She held up glitter-covered hands, a gleeful expression on her face, and something clicked.

Just like that, glitter sessions were born. These aren’t just about the magic of the photo, though that’s pretty great. These are a chance for kids to be unabashedly joyful, creating their very own real life glitter snow globe experience.

They blow it, they throw it, they dance in it.

And as they let go of their care and self-consciousness, I’m able to capture something elemental, but also unique.

The sheer abandon of childhood’s most unfiltered moments are hard to recreate. Unless you are willing to throw a box (or 15) or glitter at it.

And I am.

It makes a beautiful mess, which can be easily vacuumed up. More importantly, it creates a beautiful memory, which leaves an indelible imprint.

Bring. On. The. Glitter.

I, for one, can’t wait.

There’s so much wrapped up into all of the emotions of their growth and my aging! In the least, I’m photographing as much of it as I can.

Photographing children is a highlight for me. I love to see what they want to do, what their vision is and roll with it.

It’s our first birthday party back since the pandemic and of course we had to support a local business we love: Maker’s Lodge. We already love our handmade booties from this crafter, but she’s recently expanded into so many other wonderful things: embroidery discs, dyed yarn, fabrics, workshops, and more!

As the calendar turns another day and we celebrate, we’re so delighted to have included these beautiful mountain discs in our planning – and of course, to enjoy these celebrations with friends!

It’s fun to be a tourist in places you’ve been before, especially if you’ve spent a long time not being a tourist – a long time at home. In the last three years, we’ve travelled once. We went to Prince Edward Island this summer and it was amazing – as always. Perhaps I will drop a post about it soon because it was fully a camera lovers dream. So many beautiful photos of the kids playing, joyful and having an amazing time.

This time we took to places closer to home as we were venturing to Port Colborne to attend my husband’s grandmother’s 90th birthday party. NINETY! How amazing is that? Truly incredible. We decided to swing through Toronto and Niagara Falls so the kids could catch some sights. We regularly forget that while WE adults have memories of these places, the kids don’t. Their strong memory years were spent at home, wondering how long the pandemic might impose on their fun.

So a small detour into the big city to see the CN Tower – we didn’t go up though because it was very cold and dreary – and foggy. We’ll go back when it’s nice weather and they can see for miles! But we walked. We ate at the Old Spaghetti Factory, and they gazed up – sore necks and all – to see the massive towers in downtown Toronto. They were amazed. They were in awe of the grandeur. They loved it despite not really doing anything while there but seeing so much by just wandering!

The falls were of course a vision – so large, so powerful and so unreal. But the kids were drawn to Clifton Hill – the lights, the action, the games and treats! Hard to knock them for turning their eyes to the bustle than the “calm” of the rushing waters.

While I love photographing in Ottawa, it’s always so fun to wander around other places. Hopefully next time it won’t be so cold and we can get more creative with our photos!

There’s something truly magical about filling a child’s hand with glitter and saying “throw it at me” with total and complete seriousness.

They always look quizzical. Could I really mean it? Do I really want them to throw the glitter?

YES. Yes, I do!

Glitter sessions have been a winter staple here for years. It’s fun, it’s messy and the kids absolutely love it.

Memory making – that’s what it comes down to really. We’ll make beautiful photos and the kids have such a fun memory of freely throwing glitter, without worry or clean up!

15 minute session
$200 plus HST for one child
Images are solo posing only for glitter. No sibling posing. You may upgrade this package to include individual posing of a sibling/siblings for an additional $30/per sibling. This may extend our session time to ensure we can capture all siblings fully.

Session fee includes studio glitter set up, and all of the best edited images on a downloadable online gallery (roughly 10 images). The background for this year is shown in the sample images – I highly suggest you choose outfits without any logos, graphics or imagery to allow the glitter and child to be the focus. Solids and sequins will work well. Outfits impact the overall look/feel of your images, so please do not hesitate to reach out for further assistance with any selection. We’re ready to kick off another run of winter studio sessions for kids. There’s something for everyone – and while I know this makes it hard to choose, I’m here to enable you to choose “all” instead of making the hard decision!

These light/dark children’s sessions are a bit of a twist from previous years because this run will include use of BOTH the light and dark background. You’ll receive images with both in colour and black and white.
